Deforestation in the Amazon has been a concern for the Government and Brazilian society. In the last decades, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has been concentrated along the so-called Arco do Deforestação, which extends from the south of Pará, north of Mato Grosso, Rondônia, to the southeast of Acre. More specifically, 70% of deforestation in the Legal Amazon has occurred in about 100 municipalities in the states of Mato Grosso, Pará and Rondônia, which represent around 20% of the total area of the region. Much of this deforestation, which is followed by burning, has occurred in areas legally protected by forest legislation such as Permanent Preservation Areas and Legal Reserve.
Among the various ongoing experiences, the Alternatives to Deforestation and Burning Project (Padeq) is part of an MMA action strategy for monitoring and controlling deforestation and fires, in order to contribute to reducing felling and the use of fire, in addition to legalizing the forestry sector and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.
Projects supported by the Padeq component should promote the sustainability of rural property by significantly reducing or eliminating the use of fire in the agricultural production process through alternatives to deforestation and burning, such as: recovery of areas with productive potential discouraging the opening of new ones. areas; recovery and maintenance of Permanent Preservation Areas; recovery and conservation of the Legal Reserve; use of natural resources through sustainable management in order to insert the forest as a productive unit; dissemination of sustainable practices that contribute to an integrated view of property; mobilization of local communities around these issues.
This component intends to consolidate a set of experiences, among the 194 projects already supported by the PDA, aiming to transform them into regional references. Such projects may be complemented to achieve, in a more integrated manner, environmental, economic, social and institutional sustainability; systematize and disseminate successful experiences to other communities and influence public policies.
Currently, the PDA Technical Secretariat monitors the execution of 33 PDA Consolidation projects, 12 in the Atlantic Forest Biome and 21 in the Legal Amazon. the component.
